In recent studies, it has been revealed that the body can repair itself. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is the form of treatment used to enhance this ability of the body. It boosts the natural growth factor of the body. PRP treatment has become a more popular and trending therapy in recent years, especially in the cosmetic field. Doctors use the natural healing factor of the platelet to enhance and increase the health and appearance of the skin. The popularity and selection of PRP procedures have been increased in recent years, but on the other hand, the scientific proof of the effectiveness of the procedure is still limited.

What Is Platelet-Richplasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma mainly consists of two parts. One is plasma (the liquid portion of the blood), and the other is platelet (a type of blood cell that plays a vital role in healing). Platelets are mainly recognized for their clotting ability and exhibit some growth factors. This growth factor can start the cell division and enhance the regeneration of the tissue, or we can say it promotes the healing process in treated areas of the body. Platelet-rich plasma is just human blood having more platelets than usual. To obtain the platelet-rich plasma, the lab technician collects the blood sample from the patient's body and then puts the blood in a centrifugation machine. After centrifugation of the blood sample, the clinician separates the plasma from the blood. Then this concentrated plasma containing blood is injected into the targeted organ of the patients.

What Is The Working Principle Of Plateletrichplasma (PRP) Treatment?

Platelets are the blood cells that help enhance the healing process in the body. They help in healing wounds and also stop bleeding by forming clots. Apart from this, it also contains growth factors and supports cell growth. PRP is injected after separating it from the blood. It is injected into targeted body parts such as the tendon, knee, or scalp.

In some cases, the doctor may guide the injection using ultrasound techniques. It is used to increase the concentration of the growth hormone in a particular part of the body. It is done to increase the rate of healing in that specific body part.

How Effective Is Prp Treatment?

In 2019, a group of researchers conducted a systemic review on Plasma rich protein treatment in hair loss. This review was based on 11 research papers by different scientists that involved 262 participants who were facing the problem of hair loss. According to the research papers, in most cases, it was observed that the injection of PRP reduced hair loss and also increased the diameter and density of the hair. Another review was conducted in the same year, in which 19 research papers were reviewed. It was conducted on 460 people. This review also concluded that the PRP is effective in hair regrowth.

What Are The Uses Of The PRP Treatment?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used in various medical conditions. Some of them are discussed below:-

  • Tendon, muscle, and joint injury:PRP injections are used to treat various conditions like tennis elbow and chronic tendon injury. The involvement of PRP accelerates the healing procedure.
  • Hair loss: This is the most widely used purpose of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). It is seen to be effective in reducing male pattern baldness. It is helpful in both promoting the growth of hair and preventing hair loss.
  • Osteoarthritis: Recent studies have revealed that PRP can help reduce joint associated pain and inflammation in the case of osteoarthritis.
  • Skin rejuvenation: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is also used as a medication in anti-ageing treatments. However, there are not many pieces of evidence that PRP supports anti-ageing treatment and reduces wrinkles and other ageing signs.

Platelet-rich plasma is a treatment method used by doctors to treat various conditions like hair loss and muscle pain. Although the effectiveness of PRP in treatment of the different chronic to severe pain and tendon injury is good, the medical community needs more scientific proof about the procedure before it can decide whether the procedure is effective in other conditions or not. However, the risks that are associated with this procedure are very minimal. If you are willing to go through this treatment, then you should confirm your eligibility for the procedure by consulting with your doctor.
